Deux Dames New Experiences:
Wine Tasting in the North Carolina Piedmont Triad Region

The very first time I drank wine I wanted to regurgitate. The tartness hit my taste buds and slapped that part of my mouth that says gross. From that point on, when offered wine, I would graciously accept, pretend to drink, and before long
quickly guzzle a few glasses of water to quench my thirst. I realized the only way to find out what wine you like is by encountering wine on a more intimate level; allowing the wine to dance over your pallet.
Believe it or not you can taste a plethora of wines for as little as $5.

 What We tasted

@ World market

2005 Cupcake Chardonnay- This Chardonnay from California's Central Coast contains layers of creamy butter, citrus and vanilla subtlities. A white wine that easily impresses.

2004 Montes Malbec- This Chilean wine is full-bodied robust in flavor, where you can taste spices of the region.  I did taste "oodles of berry flavor".  But this red wine is not my favorite.

2004 Hess Allomi Vineyard Cabernet SauvignonThere is supposedly some "oak" flavors balancing the "fruit and spice" in this wine.  But it is a great wine for hearty meats like lamb, flank steak and even a strong cheddar.

2006 Kuhl Reisling - It's an amazing sweet, fruity, white wine that doesn't scare the novice. Not overpowering and a cool combination paired with chocolate, cheeses, or any other decadent dessert.

 What We tasted

@ Grove Winery

2006 Dawn's Early White- Pinot Grigio, categorized as a dry white wine  Great taste, not intimidating.

2006 Estate Reserve Chardonnay- Another dry white wine aged for 16 months in oak barrels contains buttery and tropical fruit flavors.

2006 Rose'- This is actually a red and white mix. Can you believe they make that?  It is a blend of Cabernet Franc and Pinot Gris.  I actually liked this one.  The bite of the grape wasn't as intense as some of the red wines I have tasted.  You should definitely try this.

2006 Greensboro Bicentennial Merlot-  This dry red wine was grown at the estate grove to commemorate 200 years of Greensboro history.

2006 Rosso Dolce - This sweet red wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, and sweetened with Niagara. It was good. I almost bought it. They guy was nice enough to let me taste the 2007 Niagara so I could see the difference.

**2007 Niagara - It was delicious.  The subtle fruity flavors were a great compliment to the laughing cow cheese, fruit, and cracker spread. I bought this one!

2008 Strawberry - A wine with not a grape in sight. It was delicious.  100% locally grown strawberries provide a refreshing change.

2007 Symphony- This was a really sweet wine.  It can be described as grape juice with just a little bit of wine added.

Tips to Having a Fabulous wine tasting

  • Don’t feel pressured to buy any wine.  But if you really like a bottle, by all means,
make the purchase so that you can enjoy it at home.
  •  Eat before the tasting so you aren’t drinking on an empty stomach.
  • Eat during the tasting, between each glass of wine to aid in cleaning your pallet.
  • Don’t drink and drive.
  • Have fun.
